Plant care

Soil

Snapdragons prefer well-draining, nutrient-rich soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Enriching the soil with compost or organic matter before planting helps promote healthy growth and bloom production.

Light

Snapdragons thrive in full sun to partial shade. They need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to bloom abundantly, though partial afternoon shade can be beneficial in hotter climates to prevent wilting.

Watering

These plants require moderate watering. Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure proper drainage. During dry spells, increase watering to help maintain their lush appearance.

Care

Snapdragons benefit from regular deadheading to extend the blooming period. Pinching back young plants encourages bushier growth and more flowers. Fertilize with a balanced, slow-release formula during the growing season to support continual blooming.

Did you know?

Snapdragons are not only admired for their beauty; they also have a fun, interactive quality. Gently squeezing the sides of a snapdragon flower makes it open like a dragon's mouth—an amusing feature that has delighted children (and adults) for generations. In folklore, snapdragons were believed to offer protection from deceit and were often planted near homes to ward off evil.
