The bearded iris symbolizes royalty, wisdom, and courage.

Plant care

Soil

Bearded irises prefer well-draining, neutral to slightly acidic soil. Amending clay-heavy soil with sand or organic matter can improve drainage and prevent water from pooling around the rhizomes, which can lead to rot.

Light

These irises thrive in full sun, needing at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to produce their best blooms. While they can tolerate partial shade, too little sun may result in fewer flowers.

Watering

Bearded irises require moderate watering, especially during their active growing and blooming period. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings to prevent rot. Established plants are relatively drought-tolerant and prefer not to be overwatered.

Care

Minimal maintenance is needed for bearded irises. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage more flowering and cut back foliage after it yellows in the fall. Divide clumps every 3-5 years to prevent overcrowding and ensure vigorous blooming. Apply a low-nitrogen fertilizer in early spring for optimal growth.
